Awards and Scholarships

As a student, your financial aid is probably one of your foremost concerns when considering different schools and programs. At a per-credit institution like the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, securing financial aid can be especially important to allow you to take the classes you want to without overloading every semester just to keep costs down. Aside from a broad range of other funding resources available to you as a student, the UHManoa Economics Department offers several awards exclusive to us, as well as national-level awards that our students compete well for. We hope this listing of resources and application materials helps you with one of the most difficult aspects of student life!

  • Undergraduate Award for Outstanding Student

    Criteria: Juniors or seniors in Economics with at least a 3.3 GPA who are enrolled fulltime at the University of Hawaii at Manoa with scholastic achievements, and faculty recommendations.

  • Undergraduate Award for Leadership

    Criteria: Student majoring in economics, in good academic standing, holding at least a 3.0 GPA, who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities in applying economics knowledge to serve the Department and community.

  • Christiaan Grootaert Scholarship

    Criteria: This scholarship is intended to assist undergraduate students in the Department of Economics at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa College of Social Sciences. Preference is given to meritorious Native Hawaiian students with demonstrated financial need.

  • The American Academy of Political and Social Sciences (AAPSS) Undergraduate Fellowship Award

    Criteria:

    • an outstanding grasp of a discipline's theories;
    • an enthusiasm for understanding social issues;
    • the promise of making substantial contributions to the social sciences in the future.

  • Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award

    Criteria: Student majoring in economics in recognition of student achievement.

  • Hawaii Economic Association

    Criteria: Economics major who is most likely to broaden public understanding of the economic world and who shows greatest promise in articulating the economic choices we all face in the new century.

  • University Research Council (URC) Award for Excellence in Research

    Application Deadline: varies     Award Amount: $500
    Criteria: Any full-time student working towards a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree may be nominated. Each student is limited to receiving one award at any given degree level. Each student's cumulative research activity at UHM up to the point of nomination is reviewed.

  • University Research Council (URC) Award for Summer Research

    Application Deadline: February 24     Award Amount: approx. $3000
    Criteria: Full-time undergraduate students in good standing with at least two semesters (fall and spring) before graduation are eligible. Research for which the student will receive academic credit is not eligible for the stipend portion of the award, but may apply for equipment and/or travel support if necessary to the completion of the research.
