The State's Hybrid Pension PlanAndrew Mason, University of Hawaii at Manoa Abstract The availability of the Hybrid Pension plan raises two important questions. First, am I saving enough for retirement? Second, is the Hybrid Pension plan attractive as compared with alternatives? The purpose of the seminar is to provide background information that will help faculty and staff to answer these questions. The following topics will be addressed: (1) for how long a retirement do people need to plan; (2) how much should I plan consuming during my old age; (3) what are the alternative sources of support for the elderly in the US; (4) what are the prospects for US Social Security; (5) what are some of the plusses and minuses of the hybrid plan. The seminar will not answer all the questions that one needs to consider in order to make a decision about the Hybrid plan. The speaker is not a financial planner and will not provide individual financial advice either at the seminar or later. |
