Alumni Give Large Donations
Mahalo to Dr. Ae Sil Kim who recently gave $10,000 to the Burnham Campbell Endowment Fund. Dr. Kim received her Ph.D. from the economics department in 1977; she was the first women from South Korea to receive a Ph.D. in economics. After receiving her Ph.D., she devoted many years of public service to her country, including serving as an economic advisor to the President of South Korea. Currently, she serves in the South Korea National Assembly.
Mahalo also to Dr. Chris Grootaert, who has given the department a $10,000 installment on his total donation of $50,000 to the Christiaan Grootaert Endowment Fund, which was set up to provide undergraduate scholarships in economics. Christiaan received his Ph.D. in economics in 1978 and recently retired from the World Bank, where he served as the lead economist in the social development department. He was so appreciative of the quality education he received at UHM that he wanted to establish an endowment for undergraduate economics majors, especially students of Native Hawaiian ancestry. The Chris Grootaert Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 to fulfill this desire.
