Walter Miklius Professor, UH-Manoa Economics, 1966 - 1995
In my previous life (i.e., prior to my retirement from the University of Hawaii), I received a Ph.D. in economics from UCLA and accepted a position in the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of California-Davis. After three years there, I moved to the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C and rubbed shoulders with politicians.
Well, two years of that was sufficient, and I accepted an offer from the UH and stayed there for the next thirty years. Most of that time was spent shoveling economics knowledge toward students in economics and agricultural economics courses. It was hard work but the congenial group of colleagues was a great help. There was also enough time for the beach and an occasional Mai Tai at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
Our children grew in the wonderful environment in Hawaii and benefited from the education offered by Punahou School. My wife, Betty, also found working for Punahou a delightful experience.
I ended my academic carrier on a Fulbright Scholarship, teaching for six months at the University of Vilnius in Lithuania (where I was born).
After my retirement I have directed my efforts in other directions. I have started taking painting courses and also piano lessons. I know it is kind of late to start learning to play piano at that age but I was hoping that I was a late blooming Mozart and did not want to deprive the world of my talents. Well, I was wrong on that.... But learning to play piano was lots of fun as well as requiring lots of effort. As for my painting, you can evaluate its progress by viewing the self portraits accompanying this bio.
