UHM Economics Announces Seiji Naya Student Awards and Seiji Naya Asia-Pacific Research Fund

UHM Economics is pleased to announce the establishment of two new student awards and an Asia-Pacific Research Fund at the UH Foundation.

The Seiji Naya Award to the Outstanding First-Year Student and the Seiji Naya Award for the Outstanding Third-Year Research Paper will be awarded annually to two students enrolled in UHM Economics graduate programs. Each award winner will receive $750 and a certificate.

The Seiji Naya Asia-Pacific Research Fund will provide monetary assistanceóup to $2,000óto individuals visiting the UH-Manoa campus to present research on or to give lectures on the economies of the Asia-Pacific region.

The money to establish the awards and the research came from generous contributions from all over the world to honor Dr. Seiji Naya on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Hawaii. On May 21, 2004, the UHM Economics Department hosted a gala dinner to honor Emeritus Professor Seiji Naya where over 350 people from Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, Europe, and Asia attended the dinner. Colleagues from the United Nations, the East-West Center, the University of Hawaii, and the Hawaii State Department of Economics, Development and Tourism praised his achievements as an academic, an administrator, a mentor, and a friend. For those curious minds, yes, Seiji is still active in research projects at both the University of Hawaii and the East-West Center.

For more information about the two student awards, please contact Associate Professor Byron Gangnes, Graduate Chair, UHM Economics (econgrad@hawaii.edu). For more information on the Seiji Naya Asia-Pacific Research Fund, please contact Professor Denise Konan, Chair, UHM Economics (econchr@hawaii.edu).
